MUDs (multi-user dungeons)

Language: C
Type: Fully text-based online multiplayer games
Description: A MUD is generally a fan-created game of a certain series of movies or television shows. In my past, I took part in many Star Wars-based MUDs. Although these MUDs are fully text-based (so there are no graphics to speak of), they were always very complex featuring things such as a wide variety of abilities, spells/skills, and worlds to explore. They were mostly telnet-driven (or could be played with an application specially designed for MUDs) and supported hundreds of simultaneous players in the same world. MUDs were the precursor to MMORPG's as we know them.

Some links to MUDs and MUD information:
Star Wars Reality (Knights of Darkness) - I assisted this MUD as their main coder for a period of time and it has since continued to exist.
General MUD information - Most of the MUDs I have experience with were SMAUG-based muds. There is a large repository of information on SMAUG as well as downloads of various code bases.

Most other projects I worked on have long since become extinct. MUDs were a great team-based learning experience for me as generally my code was played with simultaneously by anywhere from 20 to 50 people at once, and a staff of knowledgeable people would assist in the creation and maintenance of the worlds as well as the administration of the player base themselves (to alleviate any inter-personal issues that often arose).
